Origin and history
Mage Castle and Servairy Castle, located in Mouret (Aveyron, Occitanie region), constitute the remains of a fortified complex dating back to the 12th century. Originally, four castles (Castel-Vieil, Servayrie, Tower of Reilhac and Mage) were connected by walls and ditches, forming a coherent defensive system. Today, only the castle of Servairy remains, with its 12th century dungeon enlarged in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its architecture includes missing mâchicoulis, an elevated entrance door, and a three-level, illuminated house with sills.
The castle of the Servairy has experienced several phases of destruction and reconstruction, notably after damage suffered during the Hundred Years War in the 14th century. A major work campaign at the end of the 16th century added a tower with a screw staircase and a corner scallop. Sold as a national asset during the Revolution, the monument suffered from a lack of maintenance until its acquisition in 1993, followed by major restorations. The medieval gardens in restanques, reconstituted between 1993 and 1995, now complete the site.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1995, the castle of the Servairie also includes in its protection the feudal motte of the castle Mage, although the latter has completely disappeared. The protected elements cover the dungeon, the house, the stair tower, and the remains of the fortifications. The site, now privately owned, illustrates the architectural evolution of the co-seigneurial castles of Rouergue, between defensive and residential functions.
