Origin and history

Château Mouton Rothschild is a wine estate in the Médoc region of Pauillac, New Aquitaine. Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, he was originally named Château Brane Mouton before being renamed. Ranked second great cru in 1855, he became the only wine to change his classification in 1973, passing Premier Grand Cru under the impulse of Georges Pompidou, former collaborator of the Rothschild bank.

In 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, great-grandson of Nathaniel, took over the estate and innovated by imposing bottling at the castle in 1924, a first in the Bordelais. During the Second World War, the estate was expropriated in 1942 to escape the Germans and returned in 1945. Philippe de Rothschild then launched the tradition of labels illustrated by renowned artists, such as Picasso, Miro or Chagall.

In 1973, the castle obtained the status of Premier Grand Cru, marking its ascent with the motto: "First I am, second I was, Mouton did not change". After Philip's death in 1988, his daughter Philippine inherited the estate, before her three children became co-owners in 2014. The estate, which extends over 91 hectares, produces prestigious red wines (dominant sauvignon cabernet) and a white wine, Wing of Silver, since 1991.

Mouton Rothschild's labels have become legendary, each vintage being illustrated by a different artist since 1945. Among the notable anecdotes, the 1945 vintage holds the world's most expensive wine record, sold $290,000 for a batch of twelve bottles in 2006. The ram, an emblem of the castle, symbolizes this exceptional winemaking history, combining art, heritage and excellence.
