Origin and history
The Saint-Pantaléon church of Saint-Pantaléon-de-Larche is a religious building located in the heart of the historic village, Place du Général Couloumy. Built mainly in red stone, characteristic of the area's ancient buildings, it has a present state dating from the 15th century, probably succeeding a Romanesque structure whose traces remain like a cornice at the northern entrance. His plan adopted a Latin cross, with three vaulted spans leading to a flat-bottom sanctuary, flanked by two side chapels dedicated to Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary. The bell tower, with four openings, houses two bells.
The church has been listed as historical monuments since October 10, 1963. Its architecture combines elements from the 12th, 14th and 15th centuries, as evidenced by the cross of warheads of the nave and chapels, as well as the 15th century portal. A covered porch was later added to the façade. The capitals, decorated with geometrical motifs, and carved figures add to its heritage interest. The red stone construction and its Latin cross plan reflect local architectural traditions.
The parish of Saint-Pantaléon has been served by several parish priests over the centuries, notably before the French Revolution, with figures such as Pierre Lasteyrie in the 14th century, or Aymar de Tralagleyge in 1587. In the 19th century, servicemen such as François Bernardie (1835) and Joseph Mazeau (1871) marked his history. These records illustrate the continuity of the worship and maintenance of the building throughout the times.
The monument, owned by the commune, is located at 52 Place General Couloumy. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage importance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, and more specifically in Corrèze, where it is one of the emblematic religious buildings.
The church, with its bell tower-wall and its cut-pan choir, embodies medieval and modern architectural developments. The successive amendments, such as the addition of the porch, reflect the adaptations to liturgical and community needs. Its present state, though marked by transformations, preserves original elements that make it a valuable witness to local history.
