Origin and history

The church of Saint-André de Bannans, located in the Doubs department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, finds its origins in a 1084 charter mentioning for the first time a church on this site. The present building, built in 1725, nevertheless incorporates remains of a 16th century bell tower, testifying to an ancient religious occupation. Its architecture, typical of the region, is distinguished by an imperial roof above the bell tower, as well as an elongated plane of three ships.

The church houses remarkable furniture, mostly classified as historical monuments. Among the most notable pieces are an octagonal pulpit of 1730, a high altar and 18th century retables, as well as baptismal fonts and polyptychs of the 17th and 16th centuries. These elements illustrate the artistic and religious richness of the place, reflecting the liturgical practices and local crafts of the time.

Classified as a historic monument since December 30, 1980, the church of Saint Andrew is part of the parish of Frasne, attached to the diocese of Besançon. A cross erected in 1806 in front of the building marks a more recent stage in its history. The monument, owned by the commune, embodies both the franc-comtois architectural heritage and the continuity of Christian worship in the region since the Middle Ages.
