14th century town gate and adjoining ramparts: inscription by decree of 21 December 1925
Origin and history
La Porte de ville de Montbazin, located in the Hérault department in Occitanie, dates from the 14th century. This monument is one of the remains of the medieval fortifications of the village, demonstrating its strategic importance at that time. The gate, accompanied by portions of ramparts, was classified as a Historical Monument by ministerial decree on December 21, 1925, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.
The 1925 classification refers specifically to the 14th century gate and the adjacent parts of ramparts. These elements, now owned by the municipality of Montbazin, illustrate medieval defensive construction techniques. Their location at 20 Rue du Portail corresponds to the address recorded in the Merimée database, although the geographical accuracy is considered to be satisfactory (note 6/10).
Fortifications such as Montbazin played a key role in protecting Occitan villages in the Middle Ages, in a context marked by feudal conflicts and regional tensions. These structures were used to control access, shelter populations in the event of siege, and assert local power. Their preservation makes it possible today to study urban planning and military strategies of the time.
