City gate (AK 164, 305): classification by decree of 17 September 1964

Origin and history

The town gate of Montpezat-de-Quercy is a vestige of the medieval fortifications of the village, erected in the 14th century to protect its inhabitants. Located on Rue de la République, this stone structure combines typical defensive elements of the period: an ogival exterior passage and a curved inner passage, topped by a floor covered with occitan tiles. Its crumbled wooden doors recall its initial role in controlling entrances to the city.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 17 September 1964, this gate bears witness to the strategic importance of Montpezat-de-Quercy in the Middle Ages. Its hybrid architecture — mixing ogival and curved arches — reflects the stylistic transitions of the period, while highlighting its practical usefulness with an accessible floor. Official protection underscores its heritage value, both for its state of conservation and its role in local history.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, specify that the building (cadastre AK 164, 305) is located at 21 rue de la République, in the department of Tarn-et-Garonne. Although its current condition and conditions of visit are not detailed, its classification guarantees its preservation as a remarkable example of the fortified doors of Quercy. The Creative Commons license associated with certain photos facilitates the dissemination of its image, enhancing its cultural reputation.
