Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Florent de Niederhaslach, located in the Lower Rhine, is a jewel of Alsatian Gothic architecture. Founded at the site of a Benedictine monastery of the seventh century attributed to St Florent, bishop of Strasbourg, it was rebuilt from 1274 after the destruction of an earlier building. The fire of 1287 and the death of architect Gerlach von Steinbach in 1330 marked pauses in its construction, completed around 1385. Its tumultuous history includes looting, fire (especially in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War), and secular uses as a slaughterhouse in the 18th century.

Ranked a historic monument in 1846, the college enjoyed a major restoration between 1853 and 1870 under the direction of Émile Boeswillwald, which added neogothic elements such as the tower's elevation to 42 metres. The stained glass windows, among the oldest in Alsace (XIIIth–XIVth centuries), and the exterior sculptures (portail of 1310, gargoyles) bear witness to its rich artistic heritage. A second restoration campaign (1990–2006) aimed to preserve the state of the 19th century, despite criticism of certain freedoms taken by Boeswillwald.

The interior furniture includes a 14th-century holy tomb, 17th-15th-century stalls, and a 1903 Rinckenbach organ. The site, surrounded by the remains of the collegial cemetery and canonical houses, illustrates the religious and social importance of the collegiate, linked to the bishopric of Strasbourg until its abolition in 1789. The excavations revealed traces of a 9th century church and a partially preserved Roman cloister.

Saint Florent, hermit of the seventh century, was at the origin of the pilgrimage after the translation of his relics in 810. The building, originally dedicated to the Virgin and the Trinity, became a collegiate building in the 11th century with the installation of canons. The chapels (Our Lady, Saint Joseph) and the reliquary of Saint Florent (1716) underline his spiritual role. The successive, though controversial, restorations allowed its survival, making this monument a major witness to Alsatian history.

Modern restoration principles, applied in 1990–2006, contrast with 19th-century methods: respect for documentary value, regular maintenance, and preliminary studies (archaeology, history of art) are now privileged. The collegiate, communal property, remains a place of worship and tourist site, classified for its exceptional architecture and furniture.
