Origin and history
The Colombian House is a medieval-style mansion built in 1572, inside the walls of the ancient Beaune Castle. It is distinguished by its scauguette and its octagonal tower with roof in painted tiles of Burgundy, typical of the Burgundian architecture of the sixteenth century. Located in front of Notre-Dame Basilica and near the Hospices de Beaune, it embodies the historic heritage of the city, marked by the Duchy of Burgundy during the reign of Charles IX.
The 16th-century Echuguette d'Angel has been listed as historical monuments since 29 December 1927, while the facades and roofs have been listed since 17 September 1943. The house, originally described as in poor condition in 1574 and 1576, underwent renovations, including the addition of a turret in pepper at the end of the sixteenth century. The berries were remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries, partially altering its original appearance.
Today, the Maison du Colombier houses a gourmet hotel-restaurant and a wine bar, highlighting Burgundy cuisine and local vineyard products. This place thus combines architectural heritage and culinary tradition, while remaining a testimony of Beaune's urban history, linked to its ducal and winemaking past.
Its exact address, 1 rue Maufoux and 2 rue Charles-Cloutier, places the monument in the heart of the historic centre of Beaune, in the department of Côte-d'Or. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), and sources such as Merimée, Wikipedia, and Monumentum document its history and protections.
