Origin and history

The Commanderie of Soudaine-Lavinadière came into being in the 13th century, when the regular canonical order of the Holy Sepulchre settled and erected a commandery, thus detaching Lavinadière from the parish of Soudaine. Around 1275 Lavinadière was erected as an independent parish. In 1489 the order of the Holy Sepulchre was reunited with that of Saint John of Jerusalem (the Hospitallers), and the parish priest of Lavinadière was appointed by the hospital commander. The church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, was well maintained by the Order, but negligence in appointing priests led to local tensions.

The church of Lavinadière, built in the 13th century with a characteristic Limousin gate, was restored several times: in 1654, then in the 18th century (notably for its bell tower). 17th century murals were discovered on the flat bedside wall. In 1782 the parishes of Soudaine and Lavinadière merged, and the church of Soudaine, isolated and in ruins, was abandoned in favour of the church of Lavinadière, more central. The priory of Masgoutière, founded in 1117 on the territory of Soudaine, initially depended on the abbey of Uzerche before being assigned to the Jesuits of Limoges in 1705 and then returned to Uzerche in 1773.

In the 18th century, the last prior, Henri Pradel de Lamase, was imprisoned during the Revolution before dying at Soudaine-Lavinadière in 1798. The church, classified as a historical monument in 2003, retains remains of the primary buildings and a square bell tower added around 1800. The commune was also a high place of the Resistance during the Second World War: in April 1941, Georges Guingouin established his first maquis there, marking his recent history.

The commandory thus illustrates several historical strata: the implantation of medieval religious orders, tensions between local ecclesiastical powers (Bishop of Limoges, Abbey of Uzerche), and the legacy of the Resistance. Its architecture, combining novel elements and subsequent modifications, reflects these developments. The archaeological excavations and recent restorations have made it possible to highlight this heritage linked both to the religious history of Limousin and to the memory of the Second World War.
