Origin and history

The Convent of the Recollectines of Givet, founded in the fourth quarter of the seventeenth century, is a red brick religious building located in the border town of Givet (Ardennes). Its U-shaped structure, centered around a walk-in and a boxed garden, reflects the Conventual architecture of the time. After the Revolution, he was converted into a military store, and then into a school and office accommodation, illustrating his adaptation to the changing needs of society.

In 1980, the convent was listed as a historical monument, marking the beginning of its preservation. The renovations of the 1980s transformed it into a Pierre Tassin Cultural Centre, home to a media library, a library and exhibition spaces. The chapel, partially destroyed, gives way to a modern courtyard, while the back of the building still houses a school establishment.

The site retains protected elements such as facades and roofs, excluding later additions. Owned by the commune, it symbolizes today the link between historical heritage and local cultural life, with activities open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday. Its official address, 18-20 rue Mehul, and its Insee code (08190) anchor in the territory of the Ardennes, in the Grand East region.
