Origin and history

The convent of the Penitents is a religious building located in the commune of Saint-Geniez-d'Olt, Aveyron, in the Occitanie region. Built in the 15th century, it was partially redesigned or completed in the 17th century, reflecting two distinct architectural periods. This convent is emblematic of local history and the influence of the penitent brotherhoods in southern France.

The convent is located on Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville, in the heart of Saint-Geniez-d'Olt, a village marked by medieval and religious heritage. The building was listed in the inventory of historic monuments in 1926, then classified in 1931, recognizing its heritage and architectural value. These successive protections testify to its importance in the cultural landscape of Aveyron.

The brotherhoods of penitents, very active in the Midi de la France from the Middle Ages, played a central role in the spiritual and social life of the communities. These groups, often made up of lay people, organized processions, charity and devotional practices. The convent of Saint-Geniez-d'Olt is part of this tradition, although the specific details of its use and community remain partially documented.
