Origin and history

The Convent of the Recollets of Montpellier is a religious building built in the second half of the seventeenth century. Located in the city of Montpellier, this monument illustrates the architecture and monastic life of this period in Occitanie. The Recollets, a reformed branch of the Franciscans, often set up in urban areas to carry out preaching and assistance missions to local populations.

At that time, Montpellier was a dynamic city marked by strong intellectual and commercial activity. Convents, like the Recollet, play a central role in the social and spiritual life of the community. They serve as places of worship, reception for pilgrims, and sometimes as centres of education or care.

Their presence reflects the importance of religion in urban organization and the daily life of the inhabitants.
