Origin and history
The wrought iron cross of Saint-Robert is a listed historical monument, located in the Corrèze department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It consists of a square stone base topped by a moulded tablet, followed by a cylindrical barrel decorated with rings. The upper part, of wrought iron, has a square stem structure with welded arms, embellished with flat iron rinsels. The ensemble is crowned by a cock and decorated with symbols of the Passion: a ladder, a chalice, a spear and a sponge attached to a stick.
This cross was inscribed as a Historic Monument by order of 2 March 1927. It is located near the church of Saint-Robert, on the Place de la Prévoté, and belongs to the commune. Its architectural style and symbolic elements reflect the religious and artisanal traditions of the 16th and 17th centuries, periods marked by a strong production of wrought iron liturgical objects in rural areas.
The location of the cross, although documented (address: 53 Place de la Prévoté), is considered to be of poor accuracy (note of 5/10 according to the Merimée base). This type of monument often served as a spiritual and community landmark, marking a gathering place or central point in the villages. The attributes of the Passion recall the scenes of Christ's crucifixion, strengthening his pedagogical and commemorative role for the faithful.
The Corrèze, now part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, was historically a rural area where the road or cemetery crosses played an important role in everyday life. These monuments materialized the Christian faith while serving as landmarks for local processions or pilgrimages. Their preservation is evidence of communities' commitment to their religious and artisanal heritage.
