Origin and history

Crozat Castle is a 14th-century castle built in the town of Alboussière in the Ardèche. This monument, originally conceived as a fortified residence, bears witness to medieval defensive architecture before being profoundly altered during later enlargements. Its strategic location in the region reflects the importance of strong houses for controlling rural territories at that time.

In the 17th century, the castle underwent a first expansion campaign, marking its evolution towards a more spacious residence adapted to the needs of a changing local aristocracy. These transformations are part of a regional context where noble families modernise their homes to assert their social status and economic power, often linked to agriculture or trade.

The 19th century marked a new phase of metamorphosis under the direction of architect Louis Achille Tracol. The castle is then redesigned in a more elegant style and open to its surroundings, with the creation of a terrace overlooking a landscaped park decorated with a basin. This period corresponds to the romantic craze for rural residences, where aesthetics and comfort take precedence over the original defensive function.

Among the historical figures associated with the castle, Louis-Balthazar Dubay was born there in 1775. Born into a local noble family, he earned the titles of Lord of Cros, Baron of Boffre, Mayor of Saint-Péray and member of the electoral college of Ardèche. His journey illustrates the influence of rural elites in the political and administrative management of the department after the French Revolution.
