Origin and history

The Four-Parts-du-Monde Fountain, also known as the Carpeaux Fountain or the Observatory Fountain, is an emblematic monument of Haussmann's Paris. Located in Place Ernest-Denis in the 6th arrondissement, it marks the entrance to the Luxembourg garden and is aligned with the meridian of Paris, opposite the Observatory. commissioned in 1867 by Baron Haussmann to Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, official sculptor of Napoleon III, it symbolizes the four continents known at the time (Africa, America, Asia, Europe) supporting a celestial sphere adorned with the signs of the zodiac. Oceania, then incompletely explored, is absent for aesthetic and balance reasons.

The creation of this bronze fountain, between 1867 and 1874, mobilized several artists under the direction of architect Gabriel Davioud. Carpeaux carved the allegorical group of the four women representing the continents, while Emmanuel Frémiet designed the marine horses and aquatic animals of the basin. Eugène Legrain and Louis Villeminot worked on the globe, the zodiac frieze and the pedestal ornaments respectively. The melting of the sculptures was entrusted to the Thiébaut Frères foundry. The work, criticized for its dynamism deemed too bold (including the entanglement of the legs of the figures), also incorporates a discreet reference to the abolition of slavery: the broken chain at the ankle of Africa, partially covered by the foot of America.

Ranked a historic monument in 1926, the fountain is part of an urban complex linked to the modernization of Paris under the Second Empire. Its astronomical theme dialogue with the proximity of the Observatory, while its composition reflects the artistic and scientific ambitions of the time. A reproduction of the sculptural group is now on display at the Musée d'Orsay, demonstrating its heritage importance. The fountain thus embodies both a tribute to geographical explorations and a celebration of the technical advances of the nineteenth century.
