Origin and history

Marc Seguin's estate, called Varagnes, is a complex of buildings located in Annonay, in the department of Ardèche. Originally, it belonged to the Chomel family of Varagnes, who lived there from the 11th to the 18th century. The name "Varagnes" could derive from the term "varagner", meaning gleaner, although other origins are mentioned for similar places in the south of France. In 1791, the property was divided into two parts: Varagnes le Haut and Varagnes le Bas, the latter being transferred to Montgolfier, a family famous for its aeronautical inventions.

In 1858, then 75-year-old Marc Seguin bought Varagnes d'en Haut from his father-in-law, Mathieu Duret. He wished to spend his retirement there while pursuing studies in astronomy and science. It transforms the remains of an old strong house into a versatile place, including an observatory, mechanical and chemical workshops, a library, a chapel, a double walled greenhouse, and even an artificial "sea bath". The park, designed to offer tranquillity and inspiration, hides the house of gaze and allows an unobstructed view of the Alps. Marc Seguin wrote scientific books, published Le Cosmos, and actively participated in local life until his death in 1875.

After Marc Seguin, his son Augustin, engineer and artist, perpetuates the activity of the field. He developed experiments in electricity and photography, and welcomed personalities like the Light brothers. Property remains an intellectual and family home until the 20th century, despite periods of decline. In 1992, Valérie Seguin Lefèvre, a descendant, began her restoration. The estate is listed for historical monuments the same year, and its hydraulic system is protected in 2015. Today, it is partially open to the public during Heritage Days and managed by the Association of Friends of the Seguin Foundation.

Varagnes is also marked by its Protestant history and its links to the wars of Religion in the 16th century. The property, fief des Chomel, has traversed the centuries maintaining a strong identity, mixing family heritage, scientific innovations and artistic creativity. The descendants of Marc Seguin, such as Louis and Laurent (founders of Gnome and Rhône), or Augustin ("Tintin l'Aviateur"), have perpetuated his spirit of innovation. The estate thus symbolizes the alliance between historical heritage, science and art.

The Friends of the Seguin Foundation association, founded in 2014, now organizes cultural and scientific activities to enhance this unique place. The departmental council of the Ardèche and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region supported renovation works, including those of the greenhouse, observatory and facades. Varagnes remains an exceptional testimony of the industrial and intellectual heritage of the Seguin family.
