Origin and history

Oustrac Castle is a historic monument located in Laguiole, Aveyron department, Occitanie region. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries, it consists of a mansion transformed and enlarged in the 19th century, as well as a vast agricultural estate including meadows, pastures, arable land, wood and 150 hectares of summer mountain. This collection illustrates the rural and ethnological history of Aubrac, reflecting the traditional agro-pastoral activities of the region.

The estate was listed as historical monuments on 24 April 2007 for all its elements: the castle, the floor of the farm yard with its walls, the surrounding buildings, and the barn- barn located at the entrance. These protections underline its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The castle is also linked to the bishop of Saint-Flour Benjamin Baduel (1818-1891), born in this domain, adding a biographical dimension to his heritage.

The Oustrac estate, with its buildings and lands, offers a concrete testimony of the social and economic organization of Aubrac in the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time, large agricultural estates played a central role in community life, combining exploitation of natural resources, breeding and seasonal pastoral activities. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the lifestyles and ancestral practices of this mountainous region.

The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and describe its architecture as representative of the transformations made between the 18th and 19th centuries. The location of the castle, specified as satisfactory (level 7/10), and the references to the Merimée base reinforce its heritage legitimacy. The estate remains a notable example of the Aubracois rural heritage, between historical memory and contemporary valorisation.
