Origin and history
The Domaine du Château de Thil, classified as a Historical Monument, has its origins between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its initial construction reflects the architectural characteristics of this period, with defensive and residential elements typical of the castles of the period. The site, located in Vauxrenard in the current Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, reflects a noble occupation and a seigneurial organisation rooted in the rural landscape of Beaujolais.
In the 19th century, during the Second Empire, the castle underwent major restoration and significant modernization. The owners of the period transformed the estate by integrating a modern winery, reflecting the economic growth of the region linked to viticulture. This period also saw the renovation of the interiors, marked by the eclectic style then in vogue. The interior decorations, such as the first floor living room with its white stone fireplace inlaid with marble, illustrate this desire to mix historical inspirations with an original and contemporary creation.
The works undertaken in the 19th century are not limited to the castle: the farm buildings (cuvage, farm, stable, distillery, etc.), the stables, as well as the terraces and their retaining walls are also renovated or built. These developments underline the economic and social importance of the estate, which combines aristocratic residence and agricultural activity. Together, including the castle and its outbuildings, is included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 10 April 2014, thus recognizing its heritage and historical value.
The accuracy of the location of the domain is assessed as very satisfactory (note of 8/10), and its official address, 5084 B Le Thyl in Vauxrenard, attests to its anchoring in the Rhone territory. Today, although the practical information on visits or services offered is not detailed in the available sources, the domain remains a remarkable example of the architectural and functional evolution of French castles, from the Middle Ages to the industrial era.
