Origin and history

The Saint-Thomas d'Aquin school occupies the place of a former residence of the archbishops of Lyon, renovated from 1836. This historic site, located in Oullins, was enriched in 1861 by the construction of a chapel, initiated by the painter Paul Borel. The works, conducted under the direction of architect Pierre Bossan, were completed in 1888 with the completion of the interior decorations. The chapel, with its simple plan (single nave, transept and flat bedside), is distinguished by its interior polychromy: granite and porphyry columns, painted altars, and vaults decorated with symbolic and figurative frescoes.

The project involved several major artists: sculptor Charles Dufraine, painters Paul Borel and Jacobé Razuret, as well as Armand-Caillat goldsmith's workshops. The interior decorations, classified as Historical Monument in 1978, illustrate liturgical themes such as the struggle of the soul against Evil or the Eucharist, while the transept staged saints. Together, including the entrance gate, double-revolution staircases and facades, was protected by successive arrests in 1978 and 2010.

The old castle, attributed in part to the architect Soufflot, served as a summer residence for the Cardinal of Tencin before his transformation. Today, the site is privately owned and preserves remarkable architectural features, such as the entrance hall, the opening hall with woodwork, and the arcade façade of the 19th century building. The location at 56 rue du Perron enjoys geographical accuracy which is considered satisfactory (note 7/10).
