Origin and history
The church of Saint-Denis de Chemilly, located in the Allier department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a Catholic religious building dating mainly from the 12th century, with traces of the 11th century. It represents a late example of bourbonnais Romanesque art, marked by architectural influences both auvergnates and Burgundy. Classified as a historical monument by order of 28 December 1910, it is the only place of worship in Chemilly commune. Its plan consists of a nave of three spans flanked by bottoms, a double transept with absidioles, and a semicircular sanctuary. The central nave, vaulted in a broken cradle, contrasts with the lower sides covered with arches, while the square bell tower, on two floors, houses a unique bell decorated with religious inscriptions and figures of Saints Denis and Vincent.
The church gate, in a ressalt, is surmounted by an archvolt with three windows, and its piers are decorated with carved columns with capitals. Inside, a remarkable statue in polychrome wood, a 15th-century Bird Virgin, was restored in 1987 through intercommunal collaboration. The building suffered several damage over the centuries, including fires caused by lightning in 1605, 1738 and 1739, as evidenced by parish records. Historically, the church depended in the 12th century on the old diocese of Bourges and was attached to the Abbey of Souvigny, emphasizing its anchor in the Bourbon religious network.
The architecture of the church reflects a transition between the early Romanesque and Gothic styles, visible in the vault of the nave and transept. The north transept and the cross are covered with ridged vaults, while the south transept has a ceiling in full hanger. The apsides, in cul-de-four, and the square bell tower with two superimposed levels complete this coherent set. The bell, dated without precision but bearing Latin inscriptions ("Sit nomen Domini Benedictum"), evokes the patronage of Saint Denis, the first bishop of Paris martyred in the third century, as well as that of Saint Vincent, protector of winemakers, perhaps recalling the local wine-making importance.
The parish registers also mention repeated repairs, demonstrating the community's resilience to weather hazards and degradation. Today, Saint-Denis Church remains an active heritage, owned by the municipality, and continues to symbolize the religious and architectural heritage of Bourbonnais.
