Origin and history

The church of Saint-Didier de Chabanière, built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, replaces an old church that has become too small. Its eclectic architecture, dominated by the neo-Gothic style, is distinguished by an austere facade in grey-blue granite stone, animated by clear joints and pink stone statues. The central composition, although modest in front of the two massive towers, is enhanced by a clear limestone porch surmounted by a Virgin. Inside, the vaulted nave in a cross-dogives contrasts with the luminosity of the stained glass windows, works of the workshop Pagnon-Deschelettes, which occupy all the bays of the choir and the nave. The stalls and the wooden chair, with a neat but unidentified author invoice, complete this harmonious ensemble.

The building of the church was initiated under the direction of Abbé Duon (1813–86), who launched a public subscription in 1868 to finance the works, collecting 60,921 francs. The construction started with the Stéphanois architect Résillot and was taken over by Berthenod de Lyon. The church was blessed on December 10, 1871, before being restored in 1934 by Louis Mortamet, who interceded on the blankets. A heptagonal Baptist chapel, decorated with paintings and equipped with a stone tank and wrought iron locks, occupies the ground floor of one of the towers. Ranked a Historical Monument in 2023, the church and its plot are now owned by the commune.

The style of the church Saint Didier illustrates the influence of the neo-Gothic movement in France in the 19th century, marked by a return to medieval forms and a search for architectural authenticity. The use of local materials (granite, limestone) and the collaboration with renowned workshops, such as that of the glassmakers Pagnon-Deschelettes, demonstrate a concern for artistic quality. The public subscription reflects the commitment of the local community to this project, typical of the parish initiatives of the time to modernize places of worship.
