Origin and history

The Saint-Marcouf church of Saint-Marcouf, located in the Manche in Normandy, finds its origins in the sixth century with the foundation of a monastery by Saint Marcouf, one of the first monastic establishments of the diocese of Coutances. This monastery, destroyed during the Scandinavian invasions after 906, saw its monks exile in Corbeny (Aisne) with the relics of the saint. A Romanesque church was then built on its site, incorporating a preromanic crypt (circa 1050-1070) which would take over the plan of the monastic memory once housing the body of St.Marcouf.

The current building, redesigned in the 13th, 15th and 18th centuries, preserves Romanesque elements such as the nave with various modillons and an expanded funnel choir, reflecting the challenges of builders to reconcile a pre-existing centered plan with a basilical nave. The crypt, vaulted in ridges and supported by eight columns with stylized Corinthian capitals, is related to those of the Trinity of Caen and the Cathedral of Bayeux. It houses burials, including that of Marie-Anne-Françoise-Rose Le Berceur de Fontenay (1808), as well as a statue of Saint Marcouf.

The tower of the bell tower, partly of the 11th century, incorporates a lying in its western face, while Gothic pierces (XIIIth and 15th centuries) altered the Romanesque bays. A 14th century Saint-Marcouf fountain adjoins the cemetery. Ranked a historic monument in 1906 for its crypt and inscribed in 2007 for the entire church, it also houses a painting of Saint Dorothy (17th century) classified as an object. Its history thus combines monastic heritage, medieval transformations and modern heritage protections.
