Origin and history

The church of Saint-Médard d'Agnicourt-et-Sscales is a religious building whose nave dates back to the 12th century, while the choir and portal date from the 15th century. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1921, reflecting its architectural and cultural importance. The church has characteristic defensive features typical of the fortified churches of Thierache, with north and south turrets meeting the military needs of the sixteenth century.

The structure underwent extensive restoration in the 19th century, and its roofs and stained glass windows were damaged during the First World War. Inside, the walls are covered with a white coating, and the choir houses 18th-century woodwork surrounding the committed columns. A stained glass window depicts Mary as a saint, while a wooden statue of St.Barbe is also preserved there.

The bell tower rooster, carried by the wind, was replaced in 1997 during an official ceremony, marking a recent event in the history of this monument. The church belongs to the commune and remains an emblematic example of the religious and defensive heritage of the region, integrated into the network of fortified churches of Thiérache.
