Origin and history
Saint-Médard de Charbuy Church, located in the Yonne department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a Catholic religious building built mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries. It presents an architecture combining Romanesque and Gothic elements, typical of the stylistic transitions of this period. The nave, consisting of four spans, is lined with a south side, while a narrow chapel is set up to the north. The flat bedside, cross and transept date from the 15th century, while the nave and western facade are from the 16th century. A third work campaign in the 17th century added a chapel and a sacristy.
The western façade of the church is distinguished by its two richly carved portals, decorated with gables and pinacles decorated with vegetal motifs, including cabbages. Despite the different periods of construction, the building retains a remarkable architectural homogeneity, both outside and inside. The church was classified as historic monuments in two stages: in 1923 for its west façade and the north and south walls, and in 1932 for the rest of the building, with the exception of already protected parts.
The Saint-Médard Church, owned by Charbuy, is a representative example of Burgundy's religious heritage. Its bell tower, partially excluded from protection, dominates the village and marks the local landscape. The protected elements specifically include the west facade with its gates, as well as the walls of the north and south facades up to the first window. The precise address of the building is 7 Rue de l'Église, in postal code 89113, in the commune of Charbuy, attached to the district of Auxerre.
