Origin and history

The church of Saint-Michel de Villefranche-sur-Mer has its origins in the 13th century, with a priory dependent on the abbey of Saint-Pons, cited in 1295. In 1306, Charles of Anjou authorized the inhabitants to build a first church dedicated to Saint Michael, replaced in the 18th century because of his age. The reconstruction began in 1732 with the laying of the first stone blessed by the bishop of Nice, although the architect remained anonymous. The style is inspired by the works of Borra and Devincenti, two local figures of the Nice Baroque.

Work progressed slowly: in 1752, the walls were completed at the height of the arch, and the arch was mounted shortly afterwards. The church was finally completed in 1757, adopting a Latin cross plan with a two-span nave, oculus-lit collaterals, and a hemicycle choir. The Tuscan pilasters and the twin veins of the vaults reflect the regional baroque influence, while the facade includes classical elements.

The interior decor combines sacred art and local history. There is a marble funerary monument (1728) dedicated to Octave Emmanuel Camparo de Cairo, knight of Malta, as well as a 17th-century Christ sculpted in a fig tree block by an anonymous galerian. Behind the high altar, a collection of baroque paintings (classified in 1984) depicts religious scenes such as Saint Michael terrorizing the damned or La Fuite in Egypt. A statue of Saint Roch, patron saint of the pestiferous, recalls the epidemics that have occurred.

The Grinda organ (1790), the work of the Grinda brothers, is a major part of the heritage. Its buffet, classified in 1971, was made by carpenter Jean Antoine Mangiapan. Despite unfortunate restorations in the 20th century, the instrument was partially reconstructed between 1982 and 2006 by the Giroud and Cabourdin factors. It has 13 typical French organ games, including a Watch 8 and a Full Game VI, awarded in unequal temperament.

Ranked a historic monument in 1990, the church illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of Villefranche-sur-Mer, between medieval and Baroque heritage in Nice. Its classified furniture (tables, statues, organ) and its history linked to the knights of Malta make it an emblematic place of the French Riviera.
