Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Bar-sur-Aube, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building whose origins date mainly from the 12th century, with major additions in the 16th century. Founded by Nocher and his wife Adelaide, it was attached to the Saint-Maclou chapter of Bar-sur-Aube in 1378. Its architecture combines medieval elements, such as the vaults of the apse rebuilt in the 19th century, and Renaissance chapels. The monument is particularly famous for its halloy, a wooden porch that served both as a shelter for fairs and a burial place, as evidenced by parish records.

The church bell tower suffered a grave sinister on 24 May 1706, when lightning struck him, destroying the seven bells and seriously damaging the structure. Ranked among the first French historical monuments since 1840, the church houses a remarkable heritage: an organ from the Remiremont Abbey, a work of the factors Nicolas Dupont, Jean-François Vautrin and Antoine François Brice Didelot, later rebuilt by Lété, as well as a master altar in brown and white marble from Clairvaux Abbey. Funeral slabs, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, bear witness to its central role in local community and religious life.

The chapel Saint-Michel, mentioned in archives of 1609 for its own income, illustrates the economic importance of the building. The registers and architectural elements, like the 16th century chapels, highlight its evolution over the centuries. Today owned by the municipality, the Saint Peter church remains a symbol of the religious and historical heritage of the Dawn, open to visit and preserved for its cultural and architectural value.
