Origin and history

The church of St. Peter of Ploudiry, located in the Finistère, presents a three-vessel Latin cross plan, with a south porch dated 1665 and a characteristic bell tower with rhomboidal arrow. The large granite work includes a four-span nave covered with a panel, while the arches in the middle are based on capital columns. The current building is the result of multiple reconstructions, notably after the collapse of the bell tower in 1850, which partially destroyed the structure.

The ossuary, originally built in 1635, was ruined in 1700 and rebuilt in 1713 before being moved and rebuilt in 1731. A first church of the 16th century probably existed, but no vestige remains. The major reconstruction of 1700, led by the master builders Yan Perrot and Jean Portail according to the plans of the engineer André-Alexandre Tousseloire, kept only the south porch of 1665. In the 19th century, the departmental architect Joseph Bigot supervised the reconstruction of the lower part between 1853 and 1857, after the collapse of the bell tower.

The monument thus combines elements of the seventeenth (porch classified in 1916), eighteenth (nef and transept) and nineteenth centuries (clocher and painted arch). The work of 1856, led by the entrepreneurs Nestour and Quéré, marked the last major phase of reconstruction, however preserving old parts such as the south side and the bedside of 1700. The church, a communal property, is protected by successive rankings and inscriptions (1916 and 1997).
