Origin and history

The church of Saint-Symphorien-les-Carmes d'Avignon, originally Conventual and then Parish, was built outside the city walls by the Grand Carmes as early as 1267. A major reconstruction was initiated in 1320 under John XXII, but the work continued until the final consecration of the building on 10 April 1520. At that time, it was one of the largest churches in the city, reflecting the importance of beggars in the region.

A catastrophic collapse on 20 May 1672 left only the facade, choir and side chapels standing. The reconstruction, probably led by Louis-François de la Valfenière, was completed in 1678, giving inside its present appearance, characterized by doric pilasters and arches in the middle of the hang. The apparent structure was finally vaulted in brick in 1836, after decades of financial insecurity.

The French Revolution marked a turning point: the Grand Carmes were expelled in 1791, and the church became a place of public meetings, then the seat of the Club des Jacobins avignonnais. In 1803 it was reassigned as a parish church, inheriting the term of the old Saint-Symphorian church, destroyed. This transfer preserved historical elements, such as the foundation for choir children created by Antoine Subiet, a former choir child who became bishop of Montpellier under Charles IX.

The monument was partially protected in the 20th century: fifteen spans of the cloister were classified in 1928, followed by eight others, while the church itself was inscribed in 1932. Its architecture, typical of southern Gothic, is distinguished by a broad and luminous nave, bordered by 17 non-communicating side chapels. The sober facade reflects the austerity of begging orders, with a modest rosette and a third-point door.

Today, the church of Saint-Symphorien-les-Carmes bears witness to the architectural and political transformations of Avignon, from its medieval convent role to its contemporary parish function. Its partial cloister and nave, marked by reconstruction campaigns, make it a significant example of Provençal religious heritage.
