Saint Thibault - Holy patron and hermit
Represented by two 16th century statues.
Origin and history
The Saint-Thibault church of Saint-Thibault, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a building whose oldest parts, such as the apse, date back to the 12th century. The rest of the construction, including the modest bell tower behind the north wall of the nave, dates from the 16th century. Inside, a Christ of mercy in polychrome limestone of the sixteenth century stands out, while outside, two 16th century statues depict Saint Thibault: one in hermit, the other equestrian, holding a falcon and accompanied by a juniper.
Historically, this church was a branch of the parish of Isle and housed a priory dependent on the abbey of Molesme. In 1097, this priory was transferred to the chapel of the Château de l'Isle. The building was classified as historic monuments in 1928, especially for its portal. Today, it remains an architectural and spiritual testimony of the Romanesque and Gothic eras in Champagne.
The church's furniture and sculptures illustrate Renaissance religious art, with typical representations of local devotion. The equestrian statue of Saint Thibault, patron saint of tanners and foresters, reflects the medieval economic activities of the region, where these trades were widespread. The 1928 ranking helped preserve this heritage, while highlighting its past role as a place of worship and community gathering.
