Origin and history

Sainte-Catherine Church, located on Rue Sainte-Catherine in the Old Lille district, is a three-nave hall church of the same height dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1991, it is a remarkable example of flamboyant Gothic architecture. Its origin dates back to a parish formed in the 13th century on the gardens of the canons of the collegiate Saint-Pierre, in the former suburbs of Weppes. The existence of the parish has been attested since 1273, and the oldest bell bears the date of 1403.

The construction of the present church began at the end of the 15th century, with the nave erected between 1485 and 1487, the tower between 1500 and 1504, and the choir between 1539 and 1542. The lateral chapels were enlarged in the 18th century, in 1725 north side and between 1726 and 1727 south side. She was transformed into a barn during the Revolution and lost much of her furniture, before being returned to worship in 1797. It was then refurnished and restored in the 19th century, notably with false vaults of plaster warheads between 1857 and 1862, then restored in the 1960s.

The church is home to a rich furniture, mainly made by the workshops Buisine de Lille in the 19th century, including the pulpit (1840), the work bench (1850-1851), the statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (1855), the wall walls of the choir and the nave (1857-1870), the stalls (1877), and the confessionals (1895-1900). It also has stained glass windows by Henri Evaldre and Félix Gaudin, as well as paintings by Gerard Seghers, Victor Mottez, and Pierre-Joseph Witdoeck. The organ, whose buffet dates from 1644, is another remarkable element.

The church played a notable historical role: its tower welcomed Claude Chappe's optical telegraph from 1795 to 1846 and served as a watchman until 1891. It also preserves a reproduction of the painting Le Martyre de Saint Catherine de Pierre Paul Rubens, originally presented in the church before being transferred to the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille. This painting was offered at the church in 1615 by Jean de Seur, an influential parishioner.

The building is characterized by its plan with three ships of four spans, preceded by a square tower. The crib ceilings, with secondary ivy and veins, were restored in the 1960s to regain their original appearance. The arches in broken arches rest on piles and columns of sandstone, and the absence of a vault explains the irregular implantation of the foothills.

The church of Sainte-Catherine remains an active place of worship and a major architectural testimony of the history of Lille, combining medieval elements and restorations of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its furniture, stained glass and paintings make it a rich and diverse heritage site, reflecting the artistic and religious evolution of the region.
