Origin and history

Sainte-Marie de la Visitation Church, located in the Fauriel district of Saint-Étienne, is a parish church built on the site of a primitive chapel erected in 1805. Between 1808 and 1856, the architect Jean-Michel Dalgabio rebuilt it in a neo-Roman style, integrating the remains of the former convent of the Visitation, founded in 1621 by the visitandines. This convent, transformed into a coal depot after the Revolution, was bought by the municipality in 1807 to establish a parish church.

From 1856 to 1859, Étienne Boisson, architect of the city, carried out expansions and embellished the interior with murals, while rebuilding the facade between 1859 and 1861. The interior decoration, made between 1924 and 1932, is inspired by the Byzantine style, with frescoes covering the pendants of the domes, dedicated to the virtues of the Virgin. The stained glass windows, added around 1858-1860 by the workshops Mauvernay (Saint-Galmier) and Barrelon-Veyrat (Lyon), complete this artistic ensemble.

The church houses a major religious treasure: a Sainte Épine, a relic sent by Saint Louis to Puy-en-Velay, reported to Saint-Étienne during the Revolution by Abbé Borie. This thorn, accompanied by a handwritten letter from Saint Louis, is preserved in a reliquary designed by the goldsmith Armand-Caillat and exhibited in the chapel of the Magnificat. Among the works of art are two seventeenth-century paintings and a painting by Théodore Chassériau, all classified as Historical Monuments.

The three-nave church-hall building is distinguished by its cul-de-four choir flanked by five radiant apsidioles. The lateral naves, vaulted in cradle, contrast with the main nave covered by three domes. The exterior decoration, marked by large frescoes, and the partial integration of the former cloister into the sacristy testify to its complex architectural evolution. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1994, the church illustrates 19th-century religious architecture, mixing neo-Roman and neo-Byzantine influences.

The site, successively occupied by a convent, chapel and several churches, reflects the urban and religious transformations of Saint-Étienne. The parish of Sainte-Marie, founded in 1805, is part of the industrial history of the city, where religious heritage coexisted with the economic development of the nineteenth century.
