J. Jacques Séguier de la Verrière - Bishop of Lombez
Founded the convent in 1663.
Origin and history
The former convent of the Capuchins of Lombez was founded in 1663 by J. Jacques Séguier de la Verrière, then bishop of the city. The site, deliberately chosen away from the Save River to avoid flooding, first hosted a small religious community. It was only in 1695 that the convent was officially erected as a guardian, marking its expansion and increasing importance in the region. Its architecture is distinguished by a sober two-storey facade, separated by cornices, and an elevated ground floor accessible by a side staircase perron.
The French Revolution marked a turning point for the convent: in 1793 it was confiscated as national property and converted into barracks for the gendarmerie. Part of his furniture, especially that of the chapel, was transferred to the old cathedral of Lombez, where it still remains today. The building, partially protected since 1977 (facades and roofs inscribed in the Historical Monuments), thus illustrates the political and religious upheavals of its time.
Today, the former Capuchin convent belongs to the Gers department. Its state of conservation and current use (visits, room rental) are not specified in the available sources, but its history reflects both the Occitan religious heritage and the institutional transformations of modern France. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated a priori satisfactory (note 6/10), with an approximate address at 36 Boulevard des Pyrénées in Lombez.
