Origin and history
The medieval enclosure of Billom, dated the 12th century, constituted a defensive system surrounding the town, centered around the church of Saint-Cerneuf. Today, only a few doors remain, demonstrating its strategic importance in medieval times. These remains, like the Gate of the Boucheries, illustrate the military architecture of the region and its role in protecting the inhabitants and property.
The Gate of the Boucheries, one of the few preserved elements, was enriched in the eighteenth century by a stucco decoration in the adjoining room. This mix of styles reflects architectural developments and the re-use of medieval structures over the centuries. The two doors still visible (rue de l'Evêché and rue des Boucheries) were listed as Historic Monuments by order of November 25, 1994, highlighting their heritage value.
The enclosure of Billom is part of a regional context marked by the development of fortified villages in Auvergne during the Middle Ages. These fortifications were used to control access, protect markets and places of worship, such as the church of Saint-Cerneuf, while symbolizing local power. Their gradual decline, from the Renaissance, has often left room for urban redevelopment, as evidenced by the 18th century decor added to the door of the Boucheries.
