Origin and history

The enclosure of Sens is a hybrid monument, combining defensive elements of two distinct epochs: a Gallo-Roman origin and major reinforcements in the 13th century. It illustrates the evolution of fortification techniques, with ancient remains integrated into a more elaborate medieval structure. The city of Sens, strategic since ancient times, has thus preserved tangible traces of its military past through these ramparts, some of which are still visible today.

The Poterno del Quatre-Mares, built in the 13th century, is one of the most remarkable fortified accesses of this enclosure. It is inserted into the pre-existing Gallo-Roman walls, reflecting an intelligent reuse of old infrastructure. This gate, classified as a historical monument by decree of 19 July 1905, is accompanied by an adjoining Gallo-Roman tower, which was protected in 1889 and confirmed by a decree of 1 March 1912. These successive rankings highlight the exceptional heritage value of the site.

The protected elements specifically include the medieval poterne, the adjoining 13th century walls, and the ancient tower. The management of the site is now the responsibility of the municipality of Sens, which ensures its preservation. Although sources mention an approximate location at 21 Boulevard on July 14, little information is available about its current accessibility to the public or its contemporary uses (visits, events).

The historical context of Sens, a major episcopal city in the Middle Ages, explains the importance of these fortifications. Urban fora were then used to protect the inhabitants, property and religious institutions, in a region often through conflict. The superposition of the Gallo-Roman and medieval eras also reflects urban continuity, where ancient structures were frequently reinvested to meet the defensive needs of the following centuries.
