Precinct of land, as well as the parcels on which it is situated (Box ZB 39-41): inscription by order of 19 July 1995

Origin and history

The Bigotaye Land Precinct is a military building located in Campel, Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany. This site, dating from the middle of the Middle Ages, is distinguished by its oval shape of 80 meters by 60, surrounded by a deep ditch of 3.50 to 4 meters. Two entrances, to the east and west, pierce a double rampart, characteristic of the entrenched camps of the time.

Unlike feudal mottes, this type of fortification presents itself as a low-level platform, surrounded by a rampart of earth preceded by a ditch. The Bigotaye ditch, five to seven metres wide, appears to have been partially filled with the ramparts, especially on the north side. The site, still in good condition, was listed as historical monuments on 19 July 1995.

The monument is located at the place known as the Bigotais, in the woods between Campel and Bovel, southwest of Ille-et-Vilaine. Although the property is shared between private actors and the municipality, its access and current use (visit, rental) are not specified in the available sources. A century-old if and a fountain, once present nearby, added to its historical and landscape character.
