Origin and history
The enclosure of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne is a 13th century fortification built in the city of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This monument, typical of medieval defensive buildings, illustrates the strategic importance of the region at that time, marked by local conflicts and the need to protect people and property.
Classified as historical monuments in 1862, the enclosure includes remains of ramparts and a so-called Louis Le Gros tower. These elements, while partially preserved, provide an overview of the military construction techniques of the Middle Ages. The site is now managed by the municipality, which owns it. The enclosure, although partially visible, remains a symbol of the medieval past of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne.
The location of the enclosure, specified by the Merimée base, is indicated at the approximate address of 14 Rue des Folles. This monument is part of a broader historical context where fortified cities played a key role in territorial organization and territorial defence. Burgundy, a then prosperous region, saw the development of many urban fora to ensure the safety of inhabitants and commercial activities.
