Origin and history

The enclosure of Grand-Andely is a historical monument located in the municipality of Andelys, in the department of Eure (region Normandy). Ranked among the medieval remains, this fortification is representative of the urban defensive systems of the time, although its exact period of construction is not specified in the available sources. The ramparts, still partially visible, recall the strategic importance of the city in its regional historical context.

The Andelys, like many Norman cities, experienced a social and economic organization marked by agriculture, river trade (thanks to the Seine) and handicrafts in the Middle Ages. Urban fora, such as the Grand-Andely, were used to protect residents from frequent conflicts, while structuring urban space. Their presence also reflects the local power, whether seigneurial, ecclesiastical or communal, although the archives do not allow to identify here specific actors or events related to this forum.
