Origin and history
The enclosure of Boisseron is a medieval fortification surrounding a castral village attested since the twelfth century. It has passed through the centuries, maintaining its continuity despite modern urbanization, particularly that of the second half of the twentieth century. Its moats, dug in the rock, were dried up and transformed into gardens, while its walls and ditches still remain today.
The fortified gate of the enclosure was inscribed in historical monuments by order of 4 January 1995, marking a first heritage recognition. The entire enclosure, including its walls and ditches, was then protected by a second decree of 3 May 2006. These measures reflect the historical and architectural significance of this site, now shared between private and communal property.
Located on rue de la Vieille Porte and close to 19 rue du Four, the enclosure is part of the urban landscape of Boisseron, in the department of l'Hérault. Its state of conservation, despite a GPS location deemed mediocre (precision 5/10), makes it a rare testimony of medieval defensive systems in Languedoc. Available sources, such as the Merimée database or Wikipedia, highlight its role in local and regional history.
