Origin and history
The town hall of Poligny, located in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a partly preserved historical monument. Among its remarkable elements, the South Tower overlooking the Boussières district, as well as the adjoining portions of courtine, were included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 13 June 1991. These remains illustrate the strategic importance of the city at a time when urban fortifications played a key role in protecting local populations and economic activities.
The region of Franche-Comté, to which Poligny belongs, was historically marked by a social and economic organization centred around fortified cities. These fora were used not only to guard against conflicts, but also to control trade, particularly those related to agriculture, handicrafts and the wine trade, a major activity in the Jura. Although the precise details on the construction and evolution of this chamber are lacking, its existence reflects the urban and defensive dynamics typical of medieval and modern cities in France.
