Origin and history

The castle of Montmorin, today in ruins, is a fortified building whose origins date back to the twelfth century, with major changes in the thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Located in the Puy-de-Dôme 3 km from Billom, it overlooks a landscape extending from the Dome Mountains to the Forez Mountains. Its architecture illustrates the evolution of medieval military techniques, with an interior enclosure of the 12th-XIIIth centuries, a castle from the 14th century, and late modifications in the 15th-XVIth centuries. The site, classified as a historical monument in 1985, also houses a small museum with weapons, traditional objects and archaeological remains.

The castle was the cradle of the family of Montmorin de Saint-Herem, one of the most influential of the Auvergne nobility. The fortress initially consisted of a low-yard surrounded by walls and flanked by towers, some of which disappeared. The inner enclosure, the oldest, dates from the 12th to 13th centuries, while the outer enclosure and the entrance gate were added in the 14th century. The top of the watch tower was transformed in the 15th to 16th centuries, reflecting the defensive and residential adaptations of the era. Today, the guard corps hosts a museum open to the public in summer and by appointment for groups.

The remains retain remarkable elements such as the entrance chestnut with its two round towers, as well as a poterne and an old guard body. The site, managed by the municipality of Montmorin, offers visits allowing to discover both the military history of the castle and the daily life in Auvergne through the objects exposed. Archaeological excavations revealed, among other things, a dump site, providing insight into occupants' domestic practices. The panorama from the round path remains one of the main assets of the place, attracting visitors and historians.
