Origin and history

La Ferme des Plantins is a rural construction typical of the Mézenc-Meygal region, located in Les Estables, in the Haute-Loire department. Dated precisely from 1540-1541 thanks to a dendrochronological analysis of the woods of the house, it embodies the local architectural model with its square house, barn- barn connected by a vaulted passage, and its lauze roofs. Some openings were added at the beginning of the seventeenth century, while later modifications, such as the appentis and a barn, date from the eighteenth century, when the farm belonged to the Chartreuse de Bonnefoy.

Classified as a historic monument since 19 December 2005, the farm illustrates the evolution of agricultural techniques and rural habitat in this mountainous area. Its plan and materials reflect adaptation to climatic constraints and local resources, such as the volcanic stone used for roofing. The farm, with its floor and access walls, is fully protected, offering a complete testimony of peasant life between the 16th and 18th centuries.

The site is part of a larger set of similar farms on the Mézenc plateau, studied by historians like Roger Nicolas. These buildings, often linked to religious or seigneurial institutions, played a central role in the agro-pastoral economy of the region. The Chartreuse de Bonnefoy, owner in the 18th century, marked the history of the place with functional arrangements, stressing its importance in the network of monastic farms of Auvergne.
