Origin and history
The farm of the Pothière, also called the fortified farm of Étalante, is an emblematic 16th century building located in the commune of Étalante, in Côte-d'Or. Built on top of the Revinson Valley, it was accessible by an isolated road from the 901 departmental road. This site initially served as a hunting appointment for the prince of Condé, as evidenced by the oldest architectural elements, including a guard room located above the porch, designed to defend the site against potential assailants.
The farm has typical features of Burgundy architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries, with a staircase turret pierced by murderers and a central fountain-drinking fountain fed by a spring. A Saint-Jacques shell engraved on a window of the interior staircase suggests that the place also served as a stage on the way to Compostela. The dovecote, dating from the seventeenth century, and a sundial located at the southern corner complete this architectural ensemble. The enclosure also houses outbuildings such as a washhouse, stables and stables.
The facades, roofs and dovecote of the farm of the Pothière were inscribed in historical monuments by order of 28 December 1988. This classification recognizes the heritage value of this site, which combines agricultural, defensive and symbolic functions, reflecting local and regional history. The farm thus illustrates the evolution of fortified rural buildings in Burgundy, between practical utility and seigneurial prestige.
