Origin and history

The Cernans wash fountain, located in the Jura, was designed during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century by the architect Dufour, then in charge of the district. This public monument combines utility and aesthetics, with a circular distribution centered on a neoclassical jet pile. Originally, cast iron ornaments, now extinct, enriched its appearance. The system consists of two concentric basins: outdoor, dedicated to animals (drink), and indoor, reserved for washing linen (washing). A circular table occupies the heart of the whole, highlighting its central community function.

The reconstruction of the fountain was then entrusted to Narcisse Perrard, Dufour's successor at the head of the borough's work. The building, completely classified by decree of 27 October 2006, illustrates the importance of water infrastructure in 19th century rural villages. Its structure reflects a collective social organization, where domestic tasks such as laundry were carried out in public, strengthening ties between inhabitants. The fountain, owned by the commune of Cernans, remains an architectural testimony of the practical needs and local know-how of the period.

The location of the fountain wash, Place de la Fontaine in Cernans, confirms its central role in the daily life of the village. GPS coordinates and the cadastre (AB Park, public domain) attest to its anchoring in public space. Although some decorative elements have been lost, the structure retains its original design, combining functionality and neoclassical style. This monument is part of a regional context marked by the rise of public facilities in the 19th century, a period of modernization of the French countryside.
