Origin and history
Loray's water fountain, also known as the Round Fountain, is an emblematic monument of the Doubs architectural heritage. Built in 1851 according to the plans of the architect Alphonse Delacroix, it is distinguished by its circular shape and its dome supported by canned columns with doric capitals. Its inscription in Roman numerals on the lintel of the entrance attests to this date of construction. Located near the church, at the intersection of the streets of the town hall and the church, it embodies the importance of collective water points in 19th century villages.
The fountain was listed as historic monuments by order of 6 March 1979, thus recognizing its heritage value. This type of construction, typical of the 19th century, met a practical need for the inhabitants: washing the linen and obtaining water. The knowledge fountains were often places of female sociability, where new and local traditions are transmitted. Their architecture also reflects the hygienist concerns of the time, with structures designed to facilitate access to water while protecting users from the weather.
The architect Alphonse Delacroix, from Besançon, has marked the region with several achievements. For Loray's fountain, he opted for a sober neoclassical style, with doric columns and a dome reminiscent of ancient models. The fountain is now owned by the municipality of Loray, which ensures its preservation. Its state of conservation and its central location make it a key element of the local heritage, testifying to the rural and architectural history of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
