Origin and history

The fort house of Saint-Seine is a monument located in the commune of Saint-Seine-sur-Vingeanne, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. This type of construction, typical of medieval or post-medieval rural areas, was generally used as a fortified residence for local lords or wealthy families. Strong houses often played a defensive, residential and symbolic role, reflecting the social status of their owners in an area marked by feudal and then seigneurial organization.

In the Burgundy context, strong houses were integrated into a rural landscape where agriculture and livestock dominated the economy. These buildings, less imposing than the castles, nevertheless contributed to the structure of the territory and to the protection of local populations. Their presence also attested to social hierarchy and alliances among influential families, in a region where conflicts over land and resources were frequent until the modern era.
