Origin and history
The fortified gate of Montpeyroux is a 14th century defensive building located in the village of the same name in the department of Puy-de-Dôme. It was the main access to the fortifications surrounding the castle and the houses of Montpeyroux, established on an oval-shaped hill. The building, of arched type, is surmounted west side by a mâchicoulis and, to the north, by a bay with a bell. Inside, a small, curved-framed opening dominates the entrance.
The door was integrated into a towered enclosure, designed to protect the entire town. Its top, partially deconstructed, once housed a clock visible on both sides. A staircase allowed access to it, highlighting its role both defensive and symbolic for the community. The building was listed as a historic monument on June 25, 1951, recognizing its heritage value.
Today owned by the commune, the fortified gate bears witness to the medieval organization of the village. Its architecture reflects the defence techniques of the time, while illustrating the importance of controlled access points in fortified villages. The mâchicoulis and the bell recall respectively the military and civil functions of the work, typical of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in Auvergne.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, specify that the location of the door is approximate (level 5/10), near the village church. Its official address in the Mérimée base is listed as 1 Rue de la Grande Charreyre, confirming its anchoring in the historic urban fabric of Montpeyroux.
