Origin and history
The Pusselons Cade Oven, located in Sollies-Pont in the Var, was built in 1914 by Paulin Olivier with the help of his two sons. This dry stone oven is part of a family tradition of cade mining, a semi-itinerating activity typical of the Varian coastal Provence in the 19th and 20th centuries. Producted cade oil was used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic markets, illustrating the link between local craftsmanship and regional economy.
The Olivier family, heir to an ancestral know-how, left several ovens to cade in the region, marking the rural landscape. These structures are evidence of an economic practice that has now disappeared, where the distillation of cade juniper (or Juniperus oxicedrus) was central. The Pusselons' oven, registered with the Historical Monuments in 1994, is one of the few preserved remains of this activity.
Ranked as a historical monument by decree of 1 October 1994, the Cade des Pusselons oven embodies the memory of provençal rural crafts. Its modest but functional architecture reflects the adaptation of craft techniques to local resources. The approximate location (1105 B Chemin des Suvières) and its state of conservation are studied for the economic and social history of Provence-Alpe-Côte d'Azur.
