City gate (former): entry by order of 14 March 1946
Origin and history
Galan City Gate, located in the village of the same name in Occitanie, dates from the 16th century and illustrates the military architecture of its time. It consists of a cradle vault supported by two parallel walls, perpendicular to the rampart. The protruding protruding on the wall of the enclosure allowed control of the surrounding ditches, while the door, framed by a slight stone advance, combines a broken arch and a vault in the middle of the hangar. The crows used in the construction are still visible, bearing witness to the techniques of the time.
A straight staircase, integrated in the thickness of the wall, led to a floor equipped with two or three murderers, offering defenders a strategic position. The frame, covered with slates, overcame the whole, while a bridge once crossed the ditch in front of the door. Its construction probably coincides with the wars of Religion (1562–1598), a period of tension when cities built fortifications to protect themselves. The building, registered with the Historical Monuments in 1946, now belongs to the municipality of Galan.
The architecture of the door reveals a dual function: defensive, with its offensive elements (murder, protruding to beat the ditches), and symbolic, marking the entrance of the city. The materials used — stone for the walls, slate for the roof — and the presence of intact crows underline a preserved craftsmanship. Although the original bridge has disappeared, the current remains allow to reconstruct its role in the local defensive system.
The location of Galan, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, places this monument in a regional context marked by religious conflicts and increased protection needs. The wars of Religion, between Catholics and Protestants, have led many municipalities to strengthen their forts. The Galan Gate is a modest but representative example, where military ingenuity adapts to available resources.
Today, the city gate, although disused of its original function, remains a tangible testimony of this troubled period. Its designation as Historic Monuments in 1946 attests to its heritage value, while its communal property guarantees its preservation. The GPS coordinates and approximate address (2 Place Louis Larrieu) allow it to be located precisely in the current urban fabric.
