Gate of the Netherlands: inscription by order of 11 October 1929
Origin and history
La Porte d'En-Bas is a key element of the fortified enclosure of Peruges, a medieval city in the department of Ain. Built in the 15th century, it constitutes one of the two main accesses to the city, with the Gate of En-Haut, and is located at the southeast end, along the Rue des Rondes. Its architecture reflects the defensive needs of the time, while harmoniously integrating with the medieval urban fabric.
The Gate of En-Bas has been recognized for its heritage value and has been registered as a historical monument since October 11, 1929. This official protection underlines its importance in local history and its role in preserving Peruges' architectural identity. It is now owned by the municipality, which guarantees its conservation and maintenance.
Perugia, like many medieval cities, was organized around its ramparts and gates, which were used to control the entrances and exits of inhabitants and goods. These defensive structures were essential to ensure the security of the population against external threats, while facilitating trade. The Gate of the Netherlands, in particular, illustrates this duality between protection and openness, characteristic of the fortified cities of this period.
