Prehistoric dwellings of Châteauneuf: by order of 12 September 1924
Origin and history
The prehistoric houses of Châteauneuf constitute a major archaeological site located in the commune of Riom-ès-Montagnes, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This site, centered around the basaltic dyke of Châteauneuf, delivered significant artifacts such as polished axes, flint arrow tips, scrapers, millstone fragments and pottery, attesting to human occupation during the Middle Neolithic period. These discoveries suggest an organized society, practicing agriculture, crafts and hunting, typical of this period of transition to sedentary lifestyles.
The site is located mainly north and east of basaltic dyke, a geological formation that has been able to provide natural resources and shelter to prehistoric populations. The objects found, including a fusaïole, also indicate domestic activities such as spinning, revealing a daily aspect of the life of these communities. These archaeological elements led to the protection of the site, classified as historical monuments by order of 12 September 1924, thereby recognizing its heritage and scientific importance.
The protection of the prehistoric houses of Châteauneuf underlines their value for understanding the lifestyles and craft techniques of Neolithic in Auvergne. The site, owned by the municipality of Riom-ès-Montagnes, remains a tangible testimony of the first sedentary human settlements in this region. Although the practical information on visits is limited, its ranking makes it a place of interest for researchers and prehistoric archaeology enthusiasts.
